If you're looking for a good view of the city, you might want to walk up the steps leading to the slanted roof of the NEMO (formerly known as the New Metropolis). In summer it becomes the Amsterdam Plage, or Amsterdam Beach. It's only a joke beach, but it does offer a water "feature" and a cafe. You can sit in large bean bags have a drink, salad or sandwich and take in the lovely Amsterdam skyline.
Like most beaches, the Amsterdam Plage is best enjoyed in sunshine of course. However there isn't much shade outside, so be careful if you burn easily, bring suntan lotion.
There's a children's play area with some sand for those who really craving that "beach" experience.
You'll have to pay a cover charge of 2 Euros, unless you also pay for the NEMO, then you can enter the Plage for free. It's open until 9pm on nice days.
Posted by Sarina on 2004-04-09 23:41:31 My Score: I got burnt... true. but the view is terrific and as long as to chill out isn't a crime, I haven't seen anyone coming up with a better concept. there is not much space in this city where you feel free to breathe and your eyes are only hindered by a wide blue sky... to me: they should sell their idea :o) or for the less open one in Vienna. good vibes, cool drinks and a view, sounds so simple but trust me it aint. just as life.
