This brasserie on the pedestrian mall in Lille supposedly sells the most mussels in France. Considering that about half the people who dine in this large restaurant can be seen devouring the black shellfish, I believe it.
My first visit here several years ago was a wonderful treat. We got to sit outdoors on a warm summer evening, and relished having a tasty seafood dinner in a famous restaurant without the usual crowds.
This was in August, and Lille was almost empty, with most of the locals on holiday. On my recent visit, both the town and the Cafe Aux Moules were packed. So the service was slower and less attentive than on my first visit.
I'm not a big fan of the bivalve, but my companion ordered some, and I tried a few (that was all I could get!), and I was very impressed with how tasty they were. In fact they were probably some of the best I'd ever had. So I swore one day I would return again and have a whole order to myself!
But on a more recent visit, I was somewhat less impressed with my order of mussels. I had hoped for the smaller sweeter French mussel, but instead I discovered they serve the larger Dutch mussels, which I hardly needed to drive from Amsterdam to find.
The rest of the menu is loaded with seafood of varying quality. I wasn't too impressed with the other offerings I tried. But there is a decent selection, and the prices were reasonable.
So if you make it to Lille you might want to try this place out. Or there are other, smaller seafood places in town to check out.
