Picasso Museum

The Picasso museum is housed in an old mansion in the Marais district in Paris. It was called the Hotel Salé at one time, its name due to the profession of its owner (a salt tax collector). It eventually became a school, where Balzac once studied, and the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, an exhibition room for the bronze sculptor Henri Vian. It became the Picasso Museum in 1985.

The museum was created as was the Picasso Museum in Spain (Barcelona) - as payment in exchange for taxes due to the French government from Picasso. Upon his death, the taxes on his estate were so huge that the only way to satisfy the taxman was to clear out dusty attics and donate the stuff he couldn't sell during his lifetime. Therefore you will find few paintings in this collection, mainly statuary, bronzes, sculptures, masks, etc. A few of his more dreadful canvases from the Spanish Civil War period do appear here and there, as well as later evidence of his daliance with the Communist party. However, Picasso claimed to dedicate his entire life and work to pacifism.
