Prague State Opera

Opened in 1888, this opera house was originally built as a place for German opera, and indeed it opened with a performance of an opera by Wagner. Other great artists who've performed or directed here include Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Enrico Caruso.

The neo-roccoco interior is breathtaking, ranking among the most beautiful in Europe. If you don't get to take in an opera, you can try to get a look inside.

The Prague State Opera puts on cyclic Festivals, and this year's Verdi Festival is in full-swing until Sept 6th. The State Opera Prague, now has a ballet troupe and will be scheduling ballets throughout the season. They will also host a magnificent New Year's eve party including dinner, a performance of Strauss' Die Fledermaus and dancing on the stage afterwards.

My Score:
Worth going just to see the decor. I saw a new ballet but the experience was marred by having recorded music. You would think that in a city of such musical richness, the State Opera would be able to produce an orchestra.

My Score:
Wow. The inside of the building is amazing. A fancy box seat cost less than half what a normal seat for any musical would do in Britain. Defineantly worth adding to a romantic evening. Note that Opera is of course in Italian, with Czech 'sub-titles' - but doesn't really matter.
