Fundacio Antoni Tapies

This bizarre looking art-nouveau Catalan building in Barcelona's Eixample district houses a large collection of modern and contemporary art. Note the coils of barbed wire on the roof, great for that intimate, inviting atmosphere... unlike the fanciful, inviting buildings by Gaudi.

The painter Antoni Tapies started this foundation in 1984 to raise the conciousness of the art world about Catalan art, and it finally opened here in 1990. The artwork within could not possibly be described as a Sunday's walk in the park... in fact Tapie and some of his contemporaries are rather obssessed with the darker side of life.

An extensive collection of the works of Antoni Tapies are also on permanent display here as well. Tapies is a Catalan painter and graphic artist who began his career as a surrealist with no formal training. In 1950-51 he went on a French government scholarship to Paris, and in 1953 went to New York for his first American show. Tapies was influenced by Dubuffet and Miro and he often showed off the sameness he shared with local Joan Miro (in fact there are similarities between the artists' work of the late 1960's).

You can however explore works by other artists at the facility such as the Fluxus group, Hans Haacke, Franz Kline and Chris Marker.

More Info: Closed Mondays, open Tuesday thru Sundays. Metro line 2, 3 and 4 all stop at the nearby Passeig de Gracia station. There is a car park somewhere on the Carrer Arago, but why drive, take a taxi!
