This lively tapas bar located in the popular Plaza del Sol is usually packed full of young people, with good reason. This place serves up some of the most unusual and delicious tapas anywhere. Unlike most Barcelona tapas bars which serve the standard Spanish fare of seafood and meat dishes, Sol Soler serves up creative international and veggies dishes like cous-cous, greek salad, teriyaki chicken wings, potato pie, as well as the more typical torradas (toast with toppings) and tortillas (omelettes). Like most tapas bars, the portions here are small and very addictive, so go easy, or be prepared to spend more than you planned for tapas.
The décor is typical café style, plain and functional, with a nice tile floor, marble tables and large mirrors. The ambiance is greatly enhanced by a good choice of background music which varied from reggae to Jimi Hendrix during our visit. The friendly staff was very helpful explaining the various tapas (in English & Spanish) and their ingredients. Again, I can’t express just how good the tapas were, with my favorites being the chicken wings (to die for), and the excellent quiche.
If you’re like me, and you’ve been somewhat turned off by the selection of most tapas bars (which can be very varied in Barcelona), you’ll enjoy coming here for a different choice of delectable delights. Even if you’re not hungry, this place is a very relaxed place to have a drink, and one of the hip scenes in the Grŕcia district. Don’t miss it.
