In Javea's old town is a fine restaurant that does justice to traditional Spanish cuisine. Tertulia is located just steps away from the Cathedral, in the pedestrian zone of town.
The restaurant's interior doubles as an art gallery and when we were there, they had an exhibition of some colorful abstract works from a local artist that livened up the already bright room. Our meal got off to a shaky start when our waiter managed to spill most of a bottle of wine all over our table, just missing us. It was indeed a shame as the wine which accompanied our menu was quite good! Our table setting & a new bottle of wine was quickly and humbly restored.
We ordered the menu del dia, and were delighted with the quality and care given in preparation. Our first course of large pieces of crusty, grilled bread was served with fresh alioli and chopped tomates. It was heaven. A delicious plate of various types of olives was also greedily consumed.
My order of garlic chicken was as perfect as I've had in Spain. It was so good I could've eaten more, but they carefully measured it so I'd have room left for dessert. My friend's order of chicken with mushrooms was very savory and likewise disappeared quickly.
For dessert, I ordered the homemade tiramisu, and was amazed by perhaps the best version of this dessert I've ever encountered. It was fresh and moist with a perfect balance of flavors. Bravo!
The service was very friendly yet professional. Best of all the tab for this excellent repast was just over 25 Euros! Three weeks later I returned to Tertulia to pickup my hat which I'd left there and it was still there waiting for me.
Also on the menu are a variety of tapas, fish, valencian rice dishes like paella. If you're unsure, just ask the waiter or the owner what's best today.
