While staying at a nearby hotel, I never got a chance to eat lunch or dinner at the hotel because this place was just what I wanted!
Thai food in Thailand should be fresh, spicy and cheap. You don't need to blow a wad on food in Thailand, but the trick is finding a place that meets your hygiene requirements, uses quality ingredients and has a chef who knows what they're doing.
When I visit a new Thai restaurant, I'm always a bit wary, so I test them by ordering those tried and true Thai dishes that are served everywhere, but with varying degrees of quality. They also happen to be my favorite Thai dishes, but not all restaurants can manage to do them right. I'm talking about Pad Thai (fried rice noodles with peanuts, eggs, and usually chicken or prawns), Tom Yum Koong (spicy prawn soup with lemongrass) and Penang Koong (prawns in a very spicy coconut sauce).
Fresh Fish in Chili Sauce
The Anadaman Sea passed all tests with flying colors. Each dish was done right, with quality ingredients, especially the prawns which were fresh, properly cleaned and tasty. Subsequent visits of which there were many during my two week stay, again proved they could not only create great seafood dishes, but also European standards like Pizza were no problem for them.
The only things missing from the Andaman restaurant were the fancy Thai trimmings like an elegant teak decor and fresh orchids or carved vegetables on every plate. But I was more than happy to forego those trappings for complete, delicious meals that rarely exceeded 250 Bhat (US$6).
I highly recommend the whole fresh fish fried with chili sauce. Also any of the above mentioned dishes won't disappoint you. I enjoyed the food, the location (not many restaurants have a beach view in Karon Beach), and the very friendly staff. Indeed, I spent two weeks lapping up every morsel they served me.
I really missed the fresh seafood from the Andaman Restaurant and Phuket when I stayed in Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Evidently the variety of seafood available from the Gulf of Thailand can't match that of the Andaman Sea.
