The Republic of Equador (equator in English) has its capital in Quito, which is a World Heritage Site, especially for the most untouched and best preserved ancient city centers in the world. Ecuador also owns the unique Galapagos Islands, which are an amazing destination to visit.

Whether you come for a quick visit or extended tour, you will find a wealth of information about destinations here. The Hip Guide to Equador offers the highlights of the country, and contains many tips for making your stay here more rewarding.

Peacefully inhabited by indigenous tribes until 1463, Ecuador became part of the Incan Empire. By 1563 Quito had become the seat of Spanish colonial power. Ecuador was the first south american nation to fight for its independence beginning in 1809 and has had many ups and downs and military rulers since then. In 1979 Ecuador adopted its modern constitution and remains a democracy.
