Abraxas

This wonderful coffeeshop is tucked away in an alley just a block from the Dam square. Excellent smoke, a beautiful, trippy interior, and live DJ make this a popular place with locals and tourists.

The Abraxas is an old favorite of lots of folks in Amsterdam. The buildings date back several hundred years, according to the owner, and are directly across the alleyway from the Supper Club.

One building was built originally as a coffeeshop and café to serve clientele from the neighborhoods many newspapers a hundred years ago. The scene abck then was filled with reporters out for a drink, a meal, or a smoke. Tobacco was king back then, not marijuana, but I’m sure a few crafty Dutch were smoking opium or hashish at the time. You can feel it in the Abraxas’ aura when you are there.

From humble beginnings a few years back, Abraxas has now gone upscale and classy, and has become even more of a favorite with locals and visitors alike. Three floors are decked out like hobbitland with beautiful custom wood and tilework. Great music fills the place as the dj or dealer pick a wide range of groovy tunes. Around the corner on the Nieuwezijds Voorburghwal are several hot nightspots (clubs), so there is a lot of club energy here. You can even request a song if they’re not too busy.
Abraxas serves quality bud and hashish and is one of the few places in town that doesn’t shake their buds. You can use the microscope to view the intact tricomes up close for yourself.

Info:
To find the Abraxas Coffeeshop from the Dam Square, look at Madam Tussaud’s Building, and notice the alley to the right of it called the Kalverstraat. Enter this alleyway, and look for the very first right-hand turn into the tiny alleyway named Jonge Rollensteeg. Keep going… it’s down at the other end by the Nieuwzijdes Voorburgwal on the right. There are several large neon signs.

  1. The interior was excellent. Diffently designed by someone who knows how Alice felt. Good Dope and good Cappinino. The dealer could have smiled more! You are working in a fucking coffeeshop!

  2. excellent smoke, gotta try the hawaiian haze…man this bud is powerful. overall ambiance is very spacey, the melodic drum and bass along with the smoke can put any avid smoker posted on his/her seat. the people are cool, especially the locals. word of advice, bring lots of swishers or blunts, its funny that people were staring at use as we rolled our blunts, seems that they dont smoke blunts. but overall one of the best times ive had at the dam. highly recommended.

  3. We visited this shop repeatedly over two weeks and were continually brought back by the hot choco and shakes. The weed food was great but a couple of us had the bon bons on the plane on the way back and they felt like they may have have truffles in there too besides just weed.

  4. try out the tasty hash chocolate cookie with the walnuts inside…woooow!

if there would be a food menu in abraxas, i would never go outside…

  5. This coffeeshop was cool because of the beautiful plants growing behind glass on the top floor. The stairs are like nothing I have ever seen! Spirals all the way and it isn’t easy to balance a blunt and a special hot chocolate while climbing all those stairs.
Everyone at the shop was really friendly, and I would love to spend more time there, trying out all their varieties!

  6. My wife and I went in the first night while in Amsterdam. We wanted go back during our visit, but itwas closed for vacation. Everyone needs a break once in a while! Great place with lots to look at. The stairs are a trip. Try carrying two coffees and a bag of weed. Three floors of fun!

  7. This is the best place in the dam, we went out in the begining of april and had to go back for the day in May. Really great place!!

  8. All I have to say is try the Hawaiian Haze in here. Wow. Along with great people and a chill atmosphere, you can’t go wrong. Wow. Damn those narrow staircases!

  9. Bought a gram of White Widow here, it got me quite wasted. Also had some Hawiian Haze from here, it was even better! The barmaid could have been a bit more friendly though. Good coffeeshop overall.

  10. I’m here right now at their little internet cafe, really chilled vibes, good music, great weed. This was the first coffeeshop I visited and it’s the best i’ve seen, there’s good smoke t the Greenhouse, but the vibe here is better.
Will return when i’m back here in September.

  11. Me and my friends only went into this shop once or twice, if we had more time we would have gone a lot more. It is a really nice place, with a cool upstairs sitting room. THIS PLACE HAS THE ONLY REAL SPACE CAKES (I tried space cakes at several different places and this place was the only place where you could taste the chunks of weed in the cake and where I actually felt it). I don’t remember much about the weed, I went to Amsterdam last summer so it’s a bit hazy to me. But this place is definetly good place to go.

  12. we thought the space was gonna be a little bigger but we still found ourselves there a couple of times during our last trip, we had space cakes here ans many types of bud. all in all we feel its worth a look and then some

  13. positive: interior, weed, music
negative: tricky to find, hot inside, dangerous stairs, overrated

summary: Its ok to go there but it is kinda overrated in my opinion.

  14. This place was wicked. Already had our weed but we got a pre-rolled of some hash. Totally different to the mingin English shit they sell an the packagin was safe! Well chilled out in there, real comfy seats. I noticed that everyone who came in was real friendly, and the interior was done really well. Some pretty damn steep steps! lots of floors and places to chill. gooood.

  15. Awesome place. One of the coolest in Amsterdam. Make sure you check out the plants growing on the 3rd floor. Also, try a chocolate milkshake with some hash. MMM…

  16. I got to pay my first visit to Amsterdam in the end of November, and had 2 1/2 hours to go into the city and freak out. In fact, I had never been to any place in Europe previously. Excited to find out first-hand about the coffeeshops, I bumped around the streets randomly until running across this place. Now, I don’t know how many of these reviews come from folks who were at Abraxas at 10:00 AM on a Sunday morning, but I’ll tell you how it went: really mellow inside, just a couple of folks on each floor. I was amazed just looking at the grass selection, and after a little while, ordered some of the Bio-Crystal grass, and a coffee. The dealer, a wonderful and reserved brunette, loaned me a pipe to use – sweet, she could as easilly have made me buy one. I navigated the stairs carefully with my herb, pipe, coffee, and probably something else. Oddly, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, which I hate, was playing. I got up to the second floor (3rd was closed that time in the morning), took a seat, and began smoking the herb like an American (big puff and hold); then it struck me, I now have an hour and a half to try to smoke through the gram I bought – for only 10 euro – and I don’t have to treat each toke as if it’s money. So I took leisurely sloppy hits off the pipe, then rolled a cigarette using much more herb than tobacco. But then it happened – I had not smoked for a week, and now I’m smoking some great herb, and now, of course, I get the fear. And I mean, The Fear. I got great fear, becuase I’m in a new place for the first time (I’m not a consumate traveller), and I smoked way much. I tried to relax, took out a pad and did some writing… I started to realize, the Chilli Peppers were actually quite perfect for the setting – almost psychedelic in quality, and definately helped me to relax. I returned downstairs after the coffee, knowing that another coffee and a little movement would ease the fear. I ordered another coffee, and kept trying to smoke through the bag. Then kept writing. Fear returned. It wasn’t helped any when I realized the the horrible, death like coughs, were actually coming from a fellow sitting two chairs down from me, hunched over under his hood. He would take a drag from a marlborough, or his pipe, and then, the worst, death-like cough and a bit of wheezing would follow. Dude began mumbling to himself vaguely. Not good- gave me more fear. Time to go! I politely returned the remaining herb to the seller, since the next stop was back to the airport I had just come from, and they don’t look kindly on weed where I’m from. I cannot get the experience out of my mind, and cannot wait to get back to Amsterdam, finish off that bag that I left there, and maybe try one of the brownies (too stoned to realize that a brownie would have hit the spot!)
