The place where it all began in the Summer of Love, 1967. Is it still happening here? Well almost. The Haight-Ashbury area is just a tourist attraction, and not really so cool. While Berkeley still has a lot of the old spirit and feeling. The S.F. area is way too expensive for hippies anymore, unless you own a hi-tech business!

San Diego, California
There are some really cool places to hang, especially Ocean Beach, Encinitas. Laid back mixture of surfers and hippies make for a cool scene. Check out The Black a famous headshop in O.B. Also “blacks beach every full moon at 8:00 p.m.”. The music scene in S.D. is really happening these days. Great concerts from major acts and lots of smaller venues showcase local talent. Many things to like about S.D. and you can’t beat the perfect climate! Although it’s now overcrowded, the traffic sucks at times, and the worse thing is how expensive it’s getting to live there.
Lake Tahoe, California
It’s not only one of the most beautiful places in the country, but everyone here is laid back, down to earth and totally into nature. How could you not be when you’re living in a paradise like this? You can find great skiing here in winter, boating, kayaking and swimming in summer.
Berkeley, California
If there is anywhere in California where hippies hang out, it is definitely in Berkeley. This is where a lot (if not most) of the hippy movement began. It is famous for it’s protests in the 60’s and 70’s and even today. I have never been to a place where there are more liberal people in one area in my life, or more marijuana. Students and locals alike share the hippy mentality, just take a walk down Telegraph Ave.!
Arcata, California
This is the best place to go if you’re a hippie.. well, besides the Haight-Ashbury. It’s located in Humboldt County, which is pretty well-known for it’s marijuana growing. The community is great, there are always festivals going on about the earth, such as the Mushroom Fair, the Hemp Festival, North Country Fair, everything you can imagine. I love it here! The people are so supportive of you.. they’ve even made a law which states that women can indeed go topless around the plaza in the centre of town. ; )
Arcata is a totally unreal place to check out and LIVE too! The rents are cheap and it seems everyone is way laid back, with Humboldt next door and being amongst the greatest redwoods in the world, how can you go wrong!
Winkelman, Arizona

There is a hippy type community….no phone lines there. it is an oasis in the dessert….many trees….you would be surprised at this place…i live there and it is awesome…..we ask that we are contacted prior to someone showing up….camping spots limited….you can write to windspirit community, 4514 e. dripping springs rd. winkelman az 85292. Or visit the website: Windspirit Community Website
Mt. Shasta, California
“One of the most sacred places on earth. Everyone is so totally kind. The mountain pours out its love and watches over all its inhabitants. It snows for days in the winter, but in the summer I go live in the woods and draw off the healing energies. Another kind thing is that the cops realize that hippies are really laid back and we do a lot for the community and keep it beautiful, therefore we all do well living in harmony.”
Alma Colorado
Basically one blink and you have passed it. It is a great little hippie town, basically the last town in Park County just before you get to Breckinridge. The town consists of numerous Volkswagon vans, a coffee/bookstore, some used clothing stores and oh yeah – the famous South Park Saloon. Any doubts – go when they have their annual Festival in the Clouds!
Sapporo Japanese Restaurant Ocean Beach, California
The Sapporo Japanese Restaurant is one of my favorite spots to eat in the San Diego area. Having the good fortune to be in Ocean Beach recently for several months gave me the opportunity to enjoy many meals at the Sapporo. This tiny eatery is just a half-block from the Ocean Beach Pier and beach area, on Newport Avenue, the most happening street in this coastal village that dates back to the 1900’s.
Well-known for it’s affordable lunch special that includes Miso Soup, Salad and a main plate combination of Chicken Teriyaki and California Rolls with white rice, this place is not expensive, but offers really great food, beautifully presented. They are also specialists in Udon Noodle Soups, and many other delightful Japanese meals.
The Sapporo is a family-run establishment with great sushi and other Japanese offerings such as tempura. Everything you order here will be prepared with skill and pride, resulting in fine meals for all. The teriyaki salmon dinner platter is so good here it has tempted a self-termed strict Vegan more than once, and I have heard her exclaiming how good the fish is, and how great she feels after eating here.
I also feel great after eating some Miso Soup, nagiri sushi including fresh yellowtail, mahi-mahi, large prawns, and some rolled sushi. The California rolls are wonderful to say the least, but they do offer many others to delight the eye and the taste buds.
Recently a sushi fanatic visited, he had been living in Europe for years, and missed good fresh sushi at a reasonable price. He was so delighted with the Sapporo Japanese Restaurant that we ended up eating there every day for a week. It was great.
Open for lunch from 11:30 to 3 PM, they close until 6 PM, and stay open late serving cold beer at the bar as well as sushi. Never needed a reservation, but you can call them if you want to at 619-222-6686.
During the late 1800’s the Theosophists Society developed the area known as Point Loma, and many luminaries of the time visited the center for spiritual growth. This aura permeates the area known as Ocean Beach to this day, which is a well-known alternative community and hippie haven on the California coastline, just north of the Mexican border, in San Diego.
